The Rays came into this one sporting one of the worst bullpen ERAs in baseball, sooooo naturally they took over from Shane McClanahan and shut the Cubs down. That was cool.
By contrast, the concerns were already there for the Cubs’ bullpen, and another clunker from Phil Maton isn’t going to help. He got the Cubs’ first multi-year contract for a reliever in a long time, and so far, it hasn’t paid off. It’s early, but still. It’s disappointing.
It’s hard to do any kind of silver lining thing coming off that weekend of disappointment, but at least Jameson Taillon looked playable today. The velocity came back a bit, he weathered a rocky stretch to give the Cubs length, and generally looked like the solid back-of-the-rotation guy the Cubs need him to be, especially with multiple other starters out.
Offensively, the Cubs missed out on some big inning opportunities, though they also were victim to a whole lot of nice plays in the outfield by the Rays/warning track shots.
Gonna give the Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game to reliever Riley Martin, making his big league debut. It was a mop-up inning and pretty much uneventful in the scope of the game, but for him, I bet it was incredible.
