This feels like a good time to empty the notebook before heading out for family brunch.

I wonder about how you would feel about the Bears if this seven-round mock draft from CBS Sports came to fruition: Round 1, Pick 25: Peter Woods, defensive tackle, Clemson Round 2, Pick 57: R Mason Thomas, EDGE, Oklahoma Round 2, Pick 60: A.J. Haulcy, safety, LSU Round 3, Pick 89: Connor Lew, interior offensive lineman, Auburn Round 4, Pick 129: Josh Cameron, wide receiver, Baylor Round 7, Pick 239: Lorenzo Styles, cornerback, Ohio State Round 7, Pick 241: Jeremiah Wright, interior offensive lineman, Auburn On the surface, I’m digging it because it checks boxes early and late. The trio of Woods, Thomas, and Haulcy represents a potential early collection of immediate contributors. Adding a wide receiver who can become a playmaker in this offense would fill a sneaky need for this team. And because I’m all about rolling the dice on offensive linemen in bulk on Day 3, rounding out the draft with a second prospect who plays in the trenches speaks to me..

One position that isn’t addressed in the mock draft above is linebacker. Perhaps the return of Jack Sanborn makes the need to add depth to that position group a little less dire. That might be a discussion for another day. In the meantime, this is what Sanborn had to say (via the Bears’ official website) about his reunion with the team he entered the league with in 2022:

“I love it here in Chicago and being part of what [coach] Ben Johnson and [defensive coordinator] Dennis Allen have been building here and the success that they’ve had. It’s something I couldn’t pass up, and I’m grateful that I’m able to come back here and help in any way I can.”

I’m not sure how much Sanborn will play this season with Devin Bush and D’Marco Jackson pencilled into starting roles. Noah Sewell is probably ahead of him on the depth chart. The same could be said about a healthy T.J. Edwards. However, it is worth underscoring that Sewell and Edwards had serious season-ending injuries last year. So, at a minimum, having a warm body who can take some significant snaps in a pinch has a fair amount of value. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images) USA Today’s Nick Brinkerhoff used Grok AI to predict the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. For whatever it’s worth to you, the Twitter/X chatbot has the Bears taking Toledo safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren with pick No. 25. While doing so, the Bears pass on edge rushers like Texas A&M’s Cashius Howell and Clemson’s T.J. Parker, as well as Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald. I wouldn’t mind Chicago snagging EMW, but I hope this front office doesn’t use AI to make its picks. With all the misinformation that AI bots get fed, I simply cannot trust them to fill the Bears’ defensive needs. A mock draft drawn up by NFL Media’s Chad Reuter has the Bears and Bills doing business again with a trade that allows Buffalo to move up one spot to take Texas A&M receiver KC Concepcion. The Bears get a fifth-round pick and *STILL* end up with Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman. Reuter’s mock has Chicago double-dipping on offensive picks in Round 2 with Florida offensive tackle Austin Barber and Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields. For what it’s worth, the team addresses defensive line needs with pick No. 89 (Illinois EDGE Gabe Jacas) and unearths an intriguing center prospect in Kentucky’s Jager Burton with the fifth-rounder via Buffalo. This would certainly be an interesting way to go about making moves on NFL Draft weekend.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio wonders if the NFL’s hard-line stance on not givning the Bears compensatory picks for losing Ian Cunningham open the door for another team to hire him away. That feels like a fair question to ask. I wonder if the league will follow in MLB’s footsteps by building front offices loaded with people who have inflated titles. The unintended consequences to this decision could be wide-ranging. With the Buffalo Sabres qualifying for the NHL postseason, ESPN’s Rich Cimini points out that the NFL’s New York Jets own the longest active playoff drought. This feels like a good time to share that the Jets are on the Bears’ schedule in 2026. Hopefully, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson can emerge from that game with a win. You can read more about which teams are on Chicago’s schedule here and why it projects to be the league’s toughest strength of schedule. Angels outfielder Jo Adell had an all-time great singular performance with three home run robberies in a game that ended with the home team winning 1-0. That might be the rarest feat you see all year. And it is a reminder of how beautiful baseball is, because anyone can do something you’ve never seen before on any given day of the week.
