Yashasvi Jaiswal emerges out of Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s shadow, stamps authority in GT vs CSK match ...Middle East

Yashasvi Jaiswal was considered unlucky to miss out on featuring for the India cricket team in the T20 World Cup 2026. He’s easily the best under-25 cricketer in the world. But he’s been living in the shadows. Shubman Gill has pipped him in Test cricket after he became India’s Test captain in May 2025.

Living under the shadows

Abhishek Sharma, who was introduced into the T20I side after the T20 World Cup 2024, has now become a mainstay. In fact, he’s the highest-ranked T20I batter in the world. Mind you, Abhishek kept on playing because the selectors felt Jaiswal had to be preserved for Test cricket and was rested. In ODI cricket, he can’t get past Gill and Rohit Sharma.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was the only format or event where Jaiswal wasn’t overshadowed. Although Sanju Samson was the Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain, it was clear that Jaiswal was the best batter. But even that was snatched away from him last season.

All the limelight shifted towards a teenager, Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The then 14-year-old smashed a six to begin his IPL career. Hit the second-fastest IPL hundred. The entire world was talking about Suryavanshi. Amid all of this, Jaiswal was lost. It was as if he wasn’t among the best T20 openers in the world.

Yashasvi Jaiswal says, ‘Enough of that’

The same continued in IPL 2026. In RR’s opening match of the season, Jaiswal clearly wasn’t at his best. He scored 38 off 36. Meanwhile, Suryavanshi smashed a 15-ball half-century, the second fastest for RR. Jaiswal was going under the radar. Against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad, he changed all of that.

The 24-year-old took charge. He wasn’t in the mood to take any half-measures. In fact, he was scoring faster than Suryavanshi in the powerplay, something no one has done in the IPL since his debut. Jaiswal took Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna down. After the powerplay, he was striking at 184.

Gujarat tried to pump the brakes after the field restrictions were lifted. In the next 13 balls, he scored just 16 runs. Soon after, Kagiso Rabada got the better of him. Ideally, Jaiswal would’ve liked to kick on, but the job was done. The stage was set, and he’d reminded everyone that he wasn’t going to be living in somebody’s shadow.
