Duke’s Cameron Boozer was arguably the biggest star in college basketball this season, and although he won’t be playing a starring role this weekend at the Final Four in Indianapolis, it doesn’t mean Boozer isn’t exiting his freshman year in the sport without some hardware.
On Friday, as 4 teams not named Duke got ready to play in the Final Four, Boozer made some history, becoming the 5th freshman player to win the Associated Press National Player of the Year award.
Ironically, the past 3 freshman players to win AP Player of the Year come from Duke, with Boozer following Cooper Flagg last season and Zion Williamson in 2019. Both Flagg and Williamson were the No. 1 overall draft picks, so now it remains to be seen what Boozer will do going forward with the draft and where he’ll go if he’s in fact part of the 2026 draft.
But no matter what Boozer’s future looks like in college or the NBA, he made a big-time impact as a freshman at Duke, averaging 22.5 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game in leading the Blue Devils to the ACC regular-season and tournament titles and the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Boozer and Duke were eliminated in heartbreaking fashion by UConn in the Elite Eight last Sunday night.
Just like Boozer dominated college basketball this season, he dominated the voting for Friday’s honor, too, receiving 59 of a possible 61 first-place votes. BYU standout AJ Dybantsa earned the 2 remaining votes.
