Well, this is a nightmare scenario. Not just for today’s game (who cares about that) but for the rest of the season and potentially longer term. You’ll forgive my alarm, but I can’t act rationally about Cade Horton leaving the game in the bottom of the second inning … with the trainer after a pitch.
We don’t know what’s going on yet, and we might not for a while, but I will update this post as soon as we know more.

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 3, 2026With ANY luck, this is something small like a blister they want to grab before it becomes something else (UPDATE: After seeing the way he looked as he left the dugout, head down, near tears in his eyes, I can’t imagine that’s the case here). There wasn’t otherwise any obvious issue or arm grab in the process. But that’s a pretty optimistic hope for a guy who has, unfortunately, dealt with injuries throughout his career as both an amateur and a professional.
Again, you’ll know more as soon as I do. But for now, this is a pretty big red alert moment. Cade Horton is arguably the best pitcher on this staff, and losing him for any period of time, especially before Justin Steele is back, is going to HURT. Badly.
For now, Colin Rea has entered the game. And he’s probably the first choice to grab starts if Cade Horton has to miss an extended period of time. Ben Brown (with his new third pitch) and Javier Assad are two other options. Justin Steele is not expected back until the end of May, so I don’t think he’ll be a factor here. Jordan Wicks is still out injured. And I don’t think the Cubs would consider top pitching prospect Jaxon Wiggins just yet.
