Four astronauts are on their way to orbit the moon for the first time in more than half a century, and a group of Illinois manufacturers know their work is playing a role in the mission.
The Orion shuttle took off from Florida on Wednesday. It was an event that drew many eyes, but Illinois workers are paying even closer attention.
“It was very rewarding, nervous at first,” said Ed Trowbridge, the Senior Manager of Manufacturing at OTTO Engineering in Carpentersville. “They [NASA] chose OTTO to build the designs and build this switch.”
OTTO Engineering built 17 unique switch controls for the spacecraft. They began working on the project about eight years ago.
“I was completely confident in OTTO and our ability to figure it out,” Trowbridge said. “Our switch fires the rockets, steers the shuttle, but they also use one of them to turn on the oven.”
It’s not the first time the suburban company contributed to a space mission. It also played a roll in the Apollo spacecraft and the Space Shuttle Program.
“It’s the American dream,” said Chairman Tom Roeser, whose father founded the company in 1961. “You can, in a little town of Carpentersville 40 miles outside of Chicago, find enough capable talent to design and manufacture products of this complexity.”
From a small suburban town to the vastness of space they now look ahead to their next goal: to help send a crew to Mars.
“I think its going to be a lot of the same equipment,” Roeser said. “So yes, and we’re ready to do that.”
