INDIANAPOLIS — Tommy Lloyd took the opportunity to address his decision to coincidentally wear UNC colors while traveling to Indianapolis ahead of Arizona’s Final Four game .

The Arizona men’s basketball coach sparked online speculation Wednesday when he wore a North Carolina blue T-shirt beneath a gray quarter-zip on the team’s flight, fueling Tar Heel fans’ theories as he continues to be linked to UNC’s open head coaching job.

During the pregame press conference on Thursday, Lloyd was subtly asked about the team wearing retro 1997 uniforms all year (since Arizona won its first and only national championship in 1997 in Indianapolis), and Lloyd took the question in a different direction to clear up any wardrobe misunderstandings.

“I know where you’re going with this, but I’m like — I must have a blind spot when it comes to fashion or uniforms or headbands or shoes. I just never really notice that stuff,” Lloyd said. “I couldn’t even tell you what uniforms our guys have been wearing. I just usually know who are the team in the dark jerseys or the lighter jerseys.

“I don’t got much before that. Now, if (equipment manager Brian Brigger) is going to come up, our equipment manager if you didn’t know, he can come up and do his own press conference later and he could help you.”

Tommy Lloyd’s message remains the same when asked about UNC vacancy

When Lloyd was later asked on Thursday about the open UNC job, his message remained the same as it has been the past two times he answered the question in recent weeks, saying his full focus remains on Arizona.

“Listen, I’ve got my full focus on this team. Nothing is distracting me. That’s just how I’ve decided to approach it,” Lloyd said.

“I’m a simple guy. I am kind of just one thing at a time. I’m not a multitasker. You can ask my wife. I’m 100% locked in on Arizona basketball right now, and I’m excited to see what this team can do. I have a real strong belief in this team, and this team deserves my full attention, so that’s what I’m giving them.”

Soon after the Tar Heels fired Hubert Davis on March 24, Lloyd was quickly reported as a frontrunner for the vacancy at Chapel Hill along with Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan.

Lloyd is signed through the 2030 season and his contract at Arizona sees him earn $4.4 million in base salary in 2025-26 and 2026-27 before annual increases of $250,000 the next three seasons.

Lloyd’s buyout at Arizona is reportedly $9 million; however, his representatives have reportedly been in talks with the University of Arizona over a new contract since before the start of the NCAA Tournament, Desiree Reed-Francois told CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein ahead of Arizona’s Sweet 16 game against Arkansas.

Lloyd was hired by former Arizona athletic director Dave Heeke ahead of the 2021-22 season, and there are reported differences between Lloyd and Heeke’s successor, Reed-Francois.
