Bulls Cutting Top Trade Acquisition Jaden Ivey ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bulls’ trade deadline is now, officially, an unmitigated disaster.

Chicago announced on X that the club has waived one of its three potential long-term adds, former Detroit Pistons lottery pick Jaden Ivey, “due to conduct detrimental to the team.”

Per Shams Charania of ESPN, Ivey’s incendiary anti-LGBTQ comments during a livestream on Monday, combined with several other alienating recent posts on social media, appear to have sealed the deal.

Prior to the official news breaking this afternoon, Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times had written that Chicago was plotting an “exit strategy” to extricate itself from the Ivey situation.

Ivey had arrived to the Windy City as covertly damaged goods. He’s been grappling with lingering knee pain following a preseason surgery — a fact the Bulls either didn’t know or didn’t reveal until after the trade — and was shut down after just four games with the club. He was ruled out for the rest of the year just last week, along with power forward Jalen Smith.

Ivey’s fraught injury history had likely already severely damaged his upside as a restricted free agent this summer. Now, he’ll be an unrestricted free agent (assuming he doesn’t sign with another team to finish out the season). His pre-draft pedigree and his early Pistons play will likely help him land another deal, but it may be for less than he anticipated.

Jaden Ivey’s Departure Highlights Bulls’ Failed Trade Deadline

Now, among non-expiring contracts, the only potential long-term additions from Chicago’s seven deadline trades are guard Rob Dillingham and power forward Leonard Miller. The team also brought in eight second-round draft picks, plus one second-round swap.

Across his brisk Chicago tenure, Ivey notched averages of 11.5 points on .417/.381/.889 shooting splits, 4.8 boards, 4.0 dimes, 2.0 swipes, and 0.5 blocks per game. In his 37 total games with the Pistons and Bulls this season, Ivey lacked the explosive athleticism that had defined his game prior to suffering a foot fracture with Detroit on January 1, 2025.

Law Murray of The Athletic notes that Ivey now becomes the first top-five draft pick to be cut before the end of his fourth season since the Milwaukee Bucks waived infamous bust Dragan Bender, the No. 4 selection in 2016, during the 2019-20 season.

Clearly, Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley utterly failed to do their homework on Ivey’s health or internal psychology. It would appear that the front office duo could not have mismanaged their various veteran assets at the trade deadline any worse.
