Chicago Cubs Lineup: Edward Cabrera’s First Start as a Cub ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

CUBS LINEUP — Tonight, we find out if the Cubs won the Edward Cabrera trade or not…kidding. Kidding. But it is Cabrera’s first start in a Cubs uniform.

And given how well Owen Caissie has been performing in Miami (including his pinch-hit, walk-off homer last night) and how many concerns there are for Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, and Jameson Taillon, I’m sure there’ll be some extra hand wringing on the social media machines tonight. Not me, though. I’m cool as a cucumber. Always.

Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for Game 1 against Mike Trout and the Angels at Wrigley Field.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Nico Hoerner, 2B Carson Kelly, C Moises Ballesteros, DH Dansby Swanson, SS Michael Conforto, RF

It’s a typical Cubs lineup tonight against the Nationals, with the only decision point coming at the very bottom of the order, where Michael Conforto is again stepping in for Matt Shaw.

Generally speaking, that makes sense against the right-handed Ryan Johnson, but I am curious what kind of runway Conforto is going to get. We’re nowhere near needing to worry about that (… he’s started exactly one game). But I’m just curious. Conforto hasn’t looked particularly comfortable at the plate yet. Not that Shaw has either.

All that said, there is a lefty scheduled to start on Wednesday, so Shaw will probably start (at least) that game. No issues or concerns here, just bringing up the stuff I’m thinking about right now.

Okay, Cubs. Back to .500 tonight, right? And then never looking back.

Washington Nationals Lineup:

Zach Neto, SS Mike Trout, CF Nolan Schanuel, 1B Jorge Soler, DH Yoan Moncada, 3B Jo Adell, RF Josh Lowe, LF Logan O’Hoppe, C Oswaldo Peraza, 2B

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Edward Cabrera, RHP

Tonight, Edward Cabrera makes his first start in a Cubs uniform. You can expect some upper-90s heaters (I’m still a little unclear on if he’ll go back to leaning on the four-seamer or stick with his sinker, which helped rein in his control), and plenty of sliders, curveballs, and changeups. He’s a true 4-5 pitch guy, not someone with just the “show-me” secondaries.

You might also expect (or hope) to see plenty of balls on the ground. When he’s at his best, Cabrera is a groundball machine, and given the howling wind blowing out to center field tonight at Wrigley, you definitely hope that holds true.

Over the last two seasons, lefties have hit Cabrera consistently better than righties, but the opposite was true in 2023 and 2022. I’m going to guess he strays more towards the last two seasons (traditional splits), but I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

None of the Angels batters has a very significant history vs Cabrera. The most notable would probably be Jorge Soler, who is 2-10 with 5Ks.

Los Angeles Angels: Ryan Johnson, RHP

Ryan Johnson was selected 74th overall in the 2024 MLB draft and made his MLB debut in 2025, skipping the Minor Leagues entirely. He didn’t start, however, pitching instead entirely in relief with a 7.36 ERA over 14.2 IP. After that, guess what, he was sent to the minors.

In High-A, Johnson made 12 starts, compiling a 1.88 ERA over 57.1 IP with 65 strikeouts and just 10 walks. Now, he’s back up in The Show, straight into the rotation. That makes tonight the first big league start of his career.
