Men’s tennis looking to build momentum after ending five-match skid ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Alabama men’s tennis continued its mid-season struggles over the weekend, winning just one out of three matches and dropping to 3-8 in SEC play.

The Crimson Tide, amid a three-match losing streak, faced a formidable South Carolina squad on Friday. The Gamecocks are ranked No. 16 in the country.

South Carolina took an early advantage, capturing wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point. Vit Kalina and Andrii Zimnokh were in a 5-6 battle at the No. 1 spot when doubles play was called off.

Alabama found some positive momentum in singles. Zimnokh posted a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory on Court 3, and Matic Kriznik dropped just one game across the final two sets to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 on Court 2. For Kriznik, the match was his third consecutive singles win and seventh across his last ten matches.

The efforts of Zimnokh and Kriznik were not enough to propel Alabama to victory. The team dropped the overall match 2-5 after straight-set defeats at the other four singles positions.

Despite the team loss, head coach George Husack was encouraged by his team’s improvement and resiliency.

“We’re improving with each match and this process requires taking some punches. I’m confident our guys will respond well and be ready to both give and take blows on Sunday,” he said.

In the first match of its Sunday doubleheader, Alabama struggled to find momentum in a lopsided 0-7 defeat to Ole Miss.

In doubles, punishing net play by the Rebels and unforced errors plagued the Crimson Tide. Freshmen Brendan Loh and Jacob Olar lost 3-6 at No. 3 doubles, and Kalina and Zimnokh squandered two break-point opportunities in their final game to lose 4-6.

Singles play was a similar story. Quick, straight-set defeats on four out of six courts secured the match win for Ole Miss.

Despite losses, Kriznik and Rohan Hazratwala both battled hard in their matches. At No. 2 singles, Kriznik forced a third-set tiebreaker after losing the first set, and Rohan came up just short in a competitive 6-7, 6-7 match on Court 6.

Later in the day, Alabama got back in the win column with a 6-0 thrashing of Mississippi Valley State.

With just five available players, the undermanned Delta Devils were overwhelmed in both doubles and singles play.

The Crimson Tide dropped just two games across both doubles matches. Loh and freshman Yoshka Sborowsky were especially dominant in a 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot.

Singles play was equally as one-sided. Four Alabama players won 6-0, 6-0, and Kalina dropped just two games on Court 1 in a 6-1, 6-1 rout.

Now back in the win column after a tough five-match losing streak, Alabama will look to build some positive momentum as the end of the regular season approaches.

The Crimson Tide will celebrate Senior Night against Texas A&M on Saturday. The final home match of the season is set for 1 p.m CT.
