Cricket Australia provides justification after Ajinkya Rahane questions Cameron Green’s non-bowling in IPL 2026 ...Middle East

Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI) has left them with more questions than answers and most of them revolve around Cameron Green. Bought for a staggering INR 25.20 crore, the most expensive overseas player in IPL history, the Australian all-rounder was expected to bring balance to the side. Instead, in a game where KKR conceded 224 with ease, Green did not bowl a single over.

It did not take long for the question to reach Ajinkya Rahane. His response was as direct as it gets as he put it on Green’s cricket board. “That question you need to ask Cricket Australia.” Within a few hours, that answer arrived.

Cricket 8 mins No bowling & 18-run cameo: How Cameron Green went on KKR debut

CA confirms back issue, sets timeline for return

Cricket Australia has clarified that Green is currently dealing with a lower back issue, which has ruled him out of bowling duties for a short period. The management plan, according to CA, is already in motion. Australia have revealed that Green might be available to bowl within the next 10 to 12 days’ time.

“Cameron has a lower back injury which is being managed but requires him to abstain from bowling for a short period,” a CA spokesperson said. “Cameron is currently rebuilding his bowling loads in India with a view to return in around 10-12 days’ time. KKR has been communicated with and is fully aware of this information.”

That explanation aligns with what has been seen over the past few weeks. Green did not bowl during Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign. He then featured for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield and again operated purely as a batter.

KKR left exposed as Green becomes specialist batter

At Wankhede, that imbalance was evident. KKR rotated through six bowling options, including Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakravarthy, Kartik Tyagi and debutant Blessing Muzarabani. None of them could control the chase as they were hammered by Rohit Sharma and co. Mumbai Indians got home in 19.1 overs, making 224 look far less than it should have been.

In that context, Green’s absence with the ball stood out even more. On a surface offering bounce, he would have been a natural option. Instead, even part-timer Anukul Roy was tried ahead of him. With the bat, Green did well but not for long. He walked in during the powerplay, kept the scoring rate intact and made 18 off 10 balls. It was a useful cameo, but not enough to justify his role in the side.

This is where the bigger question stays. KKR did not invest in a specialist batter. They invested in an all-rounder who could influence both innings. Until Green resumes bowling, that role remains only half-filled. Paying INR 25.20 for a player isn’t justifiable anyways, not if he performs only half of his abilities.
