Blackhawks 3, Devils 5 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

You know how it’s seemed like every little hiccup the Blackhawks have with a puck has wound up in the back of their net lately? Well, puck karma finally came back on their side early on Sunday when Jake Allen grossly misplayed a puck and the Blackhawks took an easy 1-0 lead at 4:19 into the first.

The Devils tied the game quickly on their first power play (remember: I mentioned their power play in our pregame), but the Hawks took the lead back less than two minutes later. Chicago took a one-goal lead to the room after 20 minutes.

New Jersey got another power play early in the second period and Spencer Knight had to make a few enormous saves to keep the Blackhawks’ lead. As the second period continued, the Devils started to control more and more of the play. They were finally able to tie the game at 15:48 into the second period — at which points the shots on goal showed 15-3 in favor of the Devils.

Connor Bedard was able to draw a penalty with 2.2 seconds left in the second period, giving the Blackhawks their first power play of the night. That power play didn’t score, but it was at least interesting. The Blackhawks got another advantage in the middle of the third, and then got 57 seconds of a 5-on-3. The Hawks made that one count. Unfortunately, the lead lasted less than four minutes. And Jack Hughes gave the Devils their first lead 19 seconds later. An empty net goal for Jack closed the books.

Star 1: Frank Nazar

Nazar was feeling it from the get-go tonight. He had two terrific looks early, even attempting a shot between his own legs at one point. He was able to knock one in late in the first period to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead. Nazar was credited with five of the Blackhawks’ 13 shots on goal in the first period. Nazar continued to get chances and scored on the power play in the middle of the third period to give him his first career multi-goal game.

Star 2: Anton Frondell

Frondell, playing center for the first time in a while, attacked a terribly played puck by the goalie and found a wide open Ilya Mikheyev for the Blackhawks’ first goal of the evening. He also had the second assist on Nazar’s power play goal in the third for his first career multi-point game.

Star 3: Nick Lardis

Lardis continued to do what’s made him productive in recent games since he saw his role elevated. He worked hard in the corners and went to the front of the net. He matched Nazar’s shot attempt and individual scoring chance numbers in the game and was dangerous throughout. Lardis is absolutely taking advantage of his audition for a top-six spot next year, which is great to see.

Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks sent out Frondell between Mikheyev and Tyler Bertuzzi for the opening faceoff. Bedard then came out with Lardis and Ryan Greene. Nazar was with Ryan Donato and André Burakovsky. With Artyom Levshunov out, the Blackhawks went with five forwards on the top power play unit. The second time they got on the ice they looked pretty good (of course they scored with a two-man advantage). The second period was all-too familiar for the Blackhawks. The Devils had a 10-2 advantage in high dangers chances and 22-10 advantage in scoring chances in the second period. Chicago was very fortunate to escape the middle period with the game still tied. Wyatt Kaiser skated 16:24 of the first 40 minutes — more than two minutes more than any other defenseman in the Blackhawks’ lineup. And he spent two minutes in the penalty box in the first period. Until the two goals that flipped a one-goal lead to a one-goal deficit for the Blackhawks in less than 60 seconds in the third period, Knight was really good tonight. This game could have been out of reach in the second period. He stopped 35 of 39 in the game.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) March 30, 2026 When the Blackhawks went to the empty net late in the third period, they sent six forwards over the boards. Jack Hughes is really good at hockey.
