Three people were shot, one fatally, during a fight at a party in unincorporated Crete early Sunday, marking the third tragedy to strike the Will County community within a week.
The shooting occurred at around 1 a.m. at a property along South State Line Road near East Bemes Road.
“I hear somebody shooting maybe six or seven times,” resident Beatrice Diaz said. “After that, maybe five seconds, somebody shoots again three times.”
Neighbors estimated more than 100 people were in attendance at the party.
Two of the victims, a 26-year-old and 33-year-old, underwent surgery and were last listed to be in critical condition, authorities said. The third person involved was killed.
Diaz said she knows the family who lives at the property – and is concerned about who the victims might be.
“We hear a woman,” she said. “She was crying loud. She was saying, not my son, not my son… Please God, not my son.”
Nine miles up the road on Chalet Court – a memorial continued to grow in front of a gutted home where three young children and their 71-year-old grandfather died in a house fire last Wednesday.
Neighbors told NBC Chicago the grandfather was their soul caretaker after their mother died from cancer.
The Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating the fire.
The week began on a grim note when, according to Will County investigators, 30-year-old Jenna Strouble allegedly killed the 32-year-old father of her children and his parents on Monday. Jacob Lambert was found shot to death in his car.
The parents, 55-year-old Patrick Forde and 54-year-old Stacy Forde, were discovered in their home on East Norway Trail.
Strouble is now charged with murder – while the Crete community remains shaken.
“It was a surprise for us, especially in Crete,” Diaz said. “That’s why we chose this farm because it’s quiet. Good schools. It’s not normal. For Crete it’s not normal.”
Strouble, the suspect in last week’s triple murder, is due back in Will County court at 9 a.m. Monday.
