Well, there were some things to like today, including Alex Bregman’s eighth career multi-homer game and the second home run of the season from Ian Happ, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough to propel the Cubs to a victory. They dropped this game 6-3, which means they’ve lost their first series of the year.
On the one hand, it’s not too much to worry about this early in the year. It’s just one series, and they’ll lose more before the calendar flips to October. But on the other hand, this was a very winnable series against a not very good Nationals team at home with everyone rested. You should probably find a way to win two games.
Unfortunately for the Cubs, two things conspired against them, and they were both starting pitchers.
Nationals starter Jake Irvin was simply very sharp today. He generated 14 whiffs (7Ks) and held the Cubs to just two runs on three hits and a walk through five. And although the Cubs did hit three homers total, all three were solo shots.
By contrast, Shota Imanaga, who actually looked pretty good today overall, gave up a very costly three-run homer in the first inning, after striking out the first two batters to open the game. What stings more is that the two base runners he allowed before the homer reached on some dinky hits. It’s just baseball, but it’s frustrating.
And that’s especially true because the first thing to cross all of our mind(s) when Imanaga allowed that homer was ‘Uh oh, not again.’ But here’s the thing, he’s ALWAYS going to be a fly ball pitcher, and when the wind is blowing out at Wrigley, he’s going to give up more than his fair share of homers. The only thing we can hope, then, is that most of the long balls are solo shots. Today, they were not and that really set the Cubs back early on. Not that the bullpen was able to full lock it down thereafter.
The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is Alex Bregman. And the best moment of today was when Taylor McGregor refused to give the closest kid a foul ball because he was wearing a Cardinals jersey.
Go get ’em tomorrow, Cubs.
