Chelios Praises Knight, Spellacy Scores Short-Handed, Near the End, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

There are only nine games left for us to overanalyze, overreact to and base broad statements about the rebuild on. The Blackhawks play the New Jersey Devils this evening to close out a four-game road trip. They’ll then come home to host Jonathan Toews and the Winnipeg Jets before departing on another three-game trip… but to the other side of the continent (Edmonton, Seattle and San Jose). The Blackhawks then close the regular season with four games at home.

NHL coaches love to present the long, 82-game regular season schedule to their team in segments, which leads me to think Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill may have broken out this four-game trip as a “segment” for the Blackhawks to focus on. If the Hawks can put together a strong performance against the Devils, a .500 trip would feel a lot better than starting with a really good win against the Islanders and then two games that were the hockey equivalent of a full diaper.

In an interview with DJ Siddiqi at RG Media, Hall of Famer Chris Chelios offered his thoughts on the current state of the Blackhawks:

Connor Bedard is a skill level above everybody, and they need to surround him with some players like [Anton] Frondell, [Sacha] Boisvert has come in. They’re there. Now it’s just a matter of getting these guys some experience.

Next year possibly they could become a playoff contender. They got a great goaltender. That was one of their best deals they made over the course of the last couple of years was getting Spencer Knight from Florida. Really lucky. He looks like the guy that’s going to be there for the future. But again, they’ve got all these young defencemen. They’ve got the youngest team in the league. Now they just need to develop.

Knight comes into Sunday’s game ranked 10th in the NHL in goals saved above expected (14.6). In the OHL playoffs, AJ Spellacy scored this short-handed goal for Windsor in a 4-1 win on Saturday.

— Ontario Hockey League (@OHLHockey) March 28, 2026 Adam Gajan and Minnesota-Duluth will face top seeded Michigan with a trip to the Frozen Four on the line this afternoon at 4:30 PM CT. The game is on ESPN. Nice read here from Ben Pope on Sam Lafferty being a favorite in the room for the Blackhawks, even if he can’t get in the lineup.

Blackhawks players have admired Sam Lafferty's eternally positive attitude despite being a healthy scratch 47 times.Off the ice, he's their most beloved teammate."He comes in and is cracking jokes every day. He’s just a joy to be around."New story: t.co/n00QWmpgfq

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) March 28, 2026 Forward Jack Musa announced he’ll return to UMass for a senior year. There’s a really good chance he’ll skate on their to line with Blackhawks prospect Václav Nestrašil and Jack Galanek next year. That should be one of the top lines in college hockey next season. Love that for Nestrašil’s development.
