2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships
Dates: Wednesday, March 25–Saturday, March 28 Location: McAuley Aquatic Center, Atlanta, GA Defending Champions: Texas (1x) SwimSwam Preview Index Psych Sheets Preview Index Live Stream Live Results Live Recaps Prelims: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 Finals: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3With his NCAA record of 42.61 in the 100 back final tonight, Hubert Kos moves himself even further ahead of the field in what is one of the more hotly-contested not-real swimming events – the 200 ButterBack.
The 100 fly and 100 back were historically on the same day at NCAAS, and were a common double – due in part to its popularity, the NCAA moved the 100 fly to before the 400 IM in 2024 to give swimmers doing both a little more time before the 100 back at the end of the session on day 3.
That likely was beneficial, but the two events are now on different days, with the 100 fly on day 2 and the 100 back on day 3. With more of a gap between the two, the 100 fly/100 back combo becomes even more attractive, as it did to scorers Hubert Kos, Scotty Buff, Aiden Hayes, Ruard van Renen, and Stuart Seymour this year.
While it is impressive to even be competing at NCAAs in both events, there are levels further – scoring in both, ‘A’ finaling in both, and winning both. As far as we can tell the latter has been achieved just three times – Tom Shields in 2012, Albert Subirats in 2007, and Jay Mortenson in 1988.Both Aiden Hayes and Hubert Kos were ‘A’ finalists in both events this year, with Kos just 0.05 seconds away from taking the title in the 100 fly.
Kos is the fastest swimmer of all time in the 100 back, sitting 0.61 seconds ahead of Florida’s Jonny Marshall thanks to the 42.61 Kos swam tonight. He sits as the #2 swimmer all-time in the 100 fly after finishing 2nd behind Josh Liendo in 42.54 last night, 0.26 seconds under Caeleb Dressel‘s former NCAA record and half a second ahead of the #4 swimmer ever, Virginia Tech’s Youseff Ramadan.
As you would expect, he sits a long way ahead of anyone else in the 200 ButterBack, 1.69 seconds ahead of Luca Urlando in second. The aforementioned Ramadan is 3rd, 2.59 seconds behind Kos’s 1:25.15 addup. Only those three are under 1:28, showcasing just how dominant Kos is.
Top SC Yards 200 ButterBack Swimmers (Mens)
Several of the top 15 swimmers are competing this week – Ruard van Renen is 7th, Ilya Kharun 8th (despite a 45.33 100 back time), Aiden Hayes 9th, Will Modglin 11th, Scotty Buff 12th, Owen McDonald 13th, and Michel Arkhangelskiy 15th.
Kos is one of the elite swimmers who is at the top of both events. With Josh Liendo not having a 100 back in yards on record, he is the fastest in both events of any swimmer in the ButterBack top 100.
