One of former first lady Jill Biden’s Secret Service agents has been hospitalized in Philadelphia after accidentally shooting himself in the leg.
“On Friday morning just after 8:30, an on-duty U.S. Secret Service Special Agent suffered a non-life-threatening injury following a negligent discharge while handling a service weapon at the Philadelphia International Airport during a protective assignment,” Secret Service spokesperson Nate Herring told Us Weekly on Friday, March 27.
The Secret Service confirmed that Biden, 74, “was not present at the time of the incident” and that the accidental shooting had “no impact” on her travel plans.
“There were no reported injuries to any other individuals and the special agent is being evaluated at an area hospital in stable condition,” Herring told Us. “The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility will be reviewing the facts and circumstances of this incident. We are grateful for our law enforcement and public safety partners who provided medical assistance.”

A rep for the Philadelphia Police Department subsequently confirmed to Us that “the agent was traveling in an unmarked Chevrolet SUV when he accidentally discharged his firearm.”
“Emergency medical services responded to the scene and transported the agent to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition,” a police rep added. “Authorities have held the scene for investigation, and there have been no reports of other injuries or disruptions to airport operations.”
CBS News previously spoke to a purported eyewitness who suggested that the unnamed agent was getting back into an SUV in Biden’s motorcade when the gun went off.

Prior to Friday’s shooting, Biden was in New York City on Wednesday, March 25, to attend the opening of the off-Broadway play Public Charge. (The play is co-written by Michael J. Chepiga and Julissa Reynoso, the latter of whom served as U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra during Joe Biden’s presidential administration. Biden was president from 2021 to 2025.)

The official Secret Service website states that the primary goal of the organization is “provide an around-the-clock operational footprint devoted to the safeguarding of our protectees” using “personnel and technological resources drawn from across” the agency.
“The Secret Service also protects facilities and venues secured for its protectees. Throughout its history, the Uniformed Division has accomplished this mission through a tradition of honor, integrity, and a commitment to excellence,” the organization said. “Today, the Uniformed Division has grown both in size and scope of responsibility and is mandated by law to provide physical security for the White House Complex and the Vice President’s Residence at the Naval Observatory. The Officers also provide security and police services for foreign diplomatic missions in Washington, D.C.”
