2026 KOREAN NATIONAL TEAM TRIALS
Monday, March 23rd – Saturday, March 28th Gimcheon Indoor Swimming Pool LCM (50m) Recap #1 ResultsThe penultimate night of action unfolded at the 2026 Korean National Team Trials, the competition that will determine the nation’s roster for this year’s Asian Games.
Following up on his 100m freestyle silver from earlier in the meet, 22-year-old Olympian and world champion Hwang Sunwoo dove in for his signature 200m free.
Hwang stopped the clock at a time of 1:46.22, well off his season-best and Asian record of 1:43.92 logged at the 2025 Korean National Sports Festival last October. That feat rendered the ace the first-ever Asian man to clear the 1:44 barrier in the event to become the 7th-best worldwide performer of all time.
Already a two-time event winner here, Olympic medalist Kim Woomin settled for silver tonight, less than half a second behind in 1:46.63 while Le Ho-jun rounded out the podium in 1:47.33. In 4th and vying for a men’s 4x200m free relay spot was Kim Minseop who clocked 1:47.54.
Hwang is the reigning Asian Games champion in this men’s 2free and topped the podium at the 2024 World Championships. Last year in Singapore, however, the Korean was relegated to 4th place.
Additional Notes
National record holder Chong Sung-jae proved too quick to catch in the men’s 200m breast, posting a time of 2:09.79 to defeat the field by nearly two seconds. Park Chan-wook snagged silver in 2:11.67 and Lee Sang-hoon collected bronze in 2:13.16. Chong’s lifetime best and Korean standard remains at the 2:09.59 he registered in the Fall of 2020, so he fell only .20 outside that performance. The men’s 50m backstroke saw Yoon Ji-hwan get it done for gold, hitting the sole time of the field under the 25-second barrier. He notched 24.71 for the decisive victory, with Lee Joo-ho earning silver in 25.40 and Song Im-gyu bagging the bronze in 25.45. Yoon owns the Korean record at the 24.48 he first produced in March of last year, then again in October. A new national record was set in the women’s 200m freestyle, courtesy of Jo Hyun-ju. Jo turned in a time of 1:58.00 to handily defeat her competitors in the sole outing under 2:00. Park Hee-kyung was next to the wall in 2:00.19 and Lee Won rounded out the podium in 2:02.66. The former Korean benchmark entering this competition stood at the 1:58.10 Jo put on the books in the heats of the 2025 World Championships to place 15th. She ultimately touched in a slower 1:58.72 in the semi-final to finish 16th overall.Read the full story on SwimSwam: Hwang Sunwoo Takes 200 Free Title On Penultimate Night Of 2026 Korean Trials
