Packers Players Are Mad at the Refs — And Honestly, Their Quotes Are Great ...Middle East

The Packers and Lions slotted into the late-afternoon prime-viewing window in Week 7. While the game was closely contested, it was a bit sloppy. Frankly, there were stretches when it was downright unenjoyable to watch. But if you stuck it out, you were rewarded with a Green Bay loss at the buzzer.

As a bonus, the postgame commentary featured some premier griping from Packers players and coaches after the defeat. This piece by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky shares some banger quotes:

Packers safety Xavier McKinney: “I don’t know how the NFL’s going to treat it, but I’m not a big fan of the refs right now. I don’t think it’s great officiating, if I’m being completely honest. I think it’s bulls— a lot of the times.” More from McKinney: “It’s annoying even talking about it because these are critical drives throughout the game, and we might have a drive where we’re getting stops but you’re calling penalties and it’s like, this is not a penalty. To me, it just don’t really make any sense, and it’s killing our momentum, it’s killing our drives, and it’s kind of f—ng up the games, if I’m being honest.” Even more from the Packers safety: “I would rather get fined and try to help my team out because I see what’s going on, and it’s killing us,” McKinney said. “We all see it. We all see what’s going on. Everyone sees what’s going on, the fans see what’s going on, we see what’s going on when we’re out there.” Ooh! A tweet from Packers star pass rusher Micah Parsons, who remains on injured reserve:

@NFL @NFLOfficiating let’s just go to flag football if everytime a qb gets touched it’s roughing the passer!

— Micah Parsons (@MicahhParsons11) October 25, 2026 Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur took the high road: “I don’t even want to comment on any of the penalties. I just — it is what it is. You got to play above it, and I thought there were some tough calls, but it is what it is.” Packers edge defender Brenton Cox Jr., who was called for a controversial tide-turning roughing-the-passer penalty: “Maybe like stop in my tracks and like, I don’t know. I’m trying to give you a good answer but it’s disappointing that these are veteran guys — I’m not trying to go after the refs — well-informed guys, and I feel like you’ve got to know the difference between what’s intentional and what’s not.” Defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt (via The Athletic): “I feel like the refs were on their side the whole day.”

Sheesh! I haven’t seen the Packers clap back at the refs like this since the infamous Fail Mary.

Even Tom Brady Is Questioning the Refs After Packers-Lions Game

The officiating calls from the game were so controversial that FOX lead analyst Tom Brady was also sounding off on the refs.

Maybe sharp critiques from the best quarterback ever to play — who also happens to be the lead analyst on an NFL broadcast partner, and has an ownership stake in a team — will help put things in perspective in league offices. This story from The Athletic shares Brady’s criticism, which I found to be fair and honest. But it also highlighted officiating issues from around the league in Week 7. It feels like we’re getting a lot of these every week, and I fear that it will hurt the game and our trust that everything is on the up-and-up.

NFL STRIKES DEAL WITH REFEREES ASSOCIATION | REF SUSPENSIONS AFTER WEEK 4

That said, part of me got a kick out of hearing a certain segment of Packers fans complaining about officiating after a loss. To be fair, I get their beef. There were some pretty iffy calls made against their squad. But I didn’t hear them bringing it up when their favorite team was the beneficiary. Such is life as a fan in the NFL. Besides, it’s not as if Green Bay didn’t have chances to overcome the penalties. This probably isn’t even a story if rookie kicker Trey Smack doesn’t miss field goals from 26 and 35 yards out. And despite all of this, the Packers are still 4-3 and are still in the playoff picture. Go figure.
