Chicago Cubs fans were fired up for the start of baseball season as the North Siders kicked off their home opener Thursday.
“It’s amazing. I mean being in Wrigley Field, being in this whole environment, it’s always such a great time,” said Vince Garcia, a Cubs fan.
“Everyone is excited, looking forward to such a special occasion and it should be a holiday,” said fellow fan Eric Blanco.
Fans celebrated long-held traditions and baseball firsts as they joined together, unbothered by chaotic weather forecasts.
“This is the first Opening Day that I’ve ever been to,” said longtime fan Tim Hutchinson. “Cubs fan since the womb, but never been to an Opening Day.”
“We have three generations of Cubs fans – my grandson, my son Jack is over here,” said Matt Dillion. “We’ve been coming for 12 years Opening Day.”
For Anthony Burnett and his son, the game is special.
“I’m excited to bring my son to his first baseball game,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to come to Opening Day never could make it and today I said I’m going to do it.”
Some of the youngest fans enjoyed family-friendly activities in Gallagher Way before heading into the ballpark.
“I’m so excited to see Nico Hoerner,” said one young fan.
The popular second baseman agreed to a long-term contract extension with the team, reports indicated just moments after the Wrigley Field game.
Despite the Cubs losing 10-4 Thursday, fans are hoping the team can go all the way this season.
“I’m almost 90 years and I got to see them win in 2016 and I want to see them win it once more before I leave this earth,” said Lois Severson, a Cubs fan from Olympia Fields.
The Cubs and Nationals will square off again Saturday, with Miles Mikolas facing off against Cade Horton at Wrigley Field.
