ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department just released bodycam video from when an officer was shot on duty last Friday on the corner of Lake Avenue and Driving Park.

What happened
Police tell us the shooting happened early Friday morning when an officer was walking up to speak with a man to question him about a recent shooting. Surveillance footage obtained by News10NBC shows the man turn around and start firing shots at the officer.
The officer applied a tourniquet on himself and was rushed to the hospital. He was released on Saturday.
The shooting ignited a massive multi-agency search to find the suspect. Around 5 a.m. Friday, RPD’s drone unit found Shatique Cato, a 34-year-old from Rochester, hiding. Once a drone shone a light on him, RPD says Cato shot and killed himself.

Suspect’s rap sheet
RPD said that Cato allegedly shot a man on Hague Street back on March 9, leaving the man with life-threatening injuries. The victim from that shooting is still hospitalized.
Cato has two different violent felony convictions, having been convicted in 2010 for assault in the second degree in a shooting from that same year, and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree from a shooting incident on March 13, 2018.
He was sentenced to five years in prison plus five years of post release supervision. According to the courts, he was then released to supervision in January 2023.
Then in April 2023, Cato was arrested and charged with criminal mischief and obstruction of governmental administration. Police say he removed/damaged his state GPS monitor.
Cato was also convicted in November 2023 and sentenced to 40 hours of community service on a conditional release.
He was released from parole supervision back in November 2025.
