The worst thing Charles can do right now is meet Epstein’s victims ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Who in their right mind would want to change places with King Charles? A disgraced brother, an estranged son, a fight with cancer and a diplomatic tightrope to walk all the way to the White House. It’s enough to make anyone run for the hills (rather like the vanished Sarah Ferguson).

If dealing with President Trump were not enough, there’s now a call from Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna for the King to meet some of the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse. Khanna suggests this could happen during the proposed visit to the US next month. He says Charles could shed light on what the Royal Family knew about Andrew and Epstein, and that he should also meet the committee investigating the scandal. Congressman Khanna is, I think, away with the fairies.

Both Charles and Camilla have repeatedly said that their focus and sympathies are with the victims and survivors of all forms of abuse. But the proposition that the King should meet Epstein’s victims is surely a non-starter.

His brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, is being investigated for misconduct in public office and there are still multiple calls for him to give sworn evidence about his prolonged friendship with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The King has made it clear that the law must take its course, and the last thing he can allow himself to do is to put any obstacle in the way of that. Meeting any of Epstein’s victims could run the risk of jeopardising any potential legal action.

This is not a convenient get-out clause. It is a legal reality.

I have no doubt that both the King and Queen have been as distressed as the rest of us to hear about the abuse and trauma that so many young women and girls were subjected to. Camilla has become a champion of survivors of sexual violence. She has made many visits to women’s refuges – both publicly and privately – and listened to appalling accounts of rape and abuse. Earlier this month, on International Women’s Day, she made one of her most powerful speeches on the subject.

At a reception at St James’s Palace, she said: “To every survivor of every kind of violence, many of whom have not been able to tell their stories or who have not been believed, please know that you are not alone. We stand with you and alongside you, today and every day, in solidarity, sorrow and sympathy.”

Her words were widely taken as a sign of support for Epstein’s victims.

Next month’s visit to the US – if it goes ahead – is already fraught with difficulty. Will President Trump still be hurling abuse at our Prime Minister? Will Britain have been dragged further into his war with Iran? Some people have suggested that rather than join the celebrations for America’s independence from Britain 250 years ago, we should use this anniversary to declare our own independence from the United States.

And that is the tightrope that the King is required to walk. He must smooth ruffled feathers, bandage this battered so-called special relationship and execute a masterclass in diplomacy.

There will probably be protests and questions about Andrew’s friendship with Epstein, just as there are now at so many of the King’s public engagements in this country. And Charles will dutifully ignore them as best he can.

But it’s going to be a tough gig. It makes me think back to one of my conversations with Diana, the late Princess of Wales, who wondered how Charles would cope with being King. She was probably being mischievous, but she told me she thought he’d have a much happier life quietly painting in Tuscany.

I’m sure he would – but he has a job to do and he will do it well.
