ROCHESTER, N.Y. — NASA astronaut Don Pettit took stunning photos from the International Space Station with help from people at RIT.
Pettit shared the photos Thursday at RIT. Back in 2023, he needed a camera mount that could point the camera in the same place over time by moving its position in line with the space station’s orbit around Earth.
Pettit went to the RIT School of Photographic Arts and Sciences to find a solution. The result was a star tracker.
“All these phenomenon that you can see in space but are very faint and hard to record unless you increase the time of the exposure and this tracker system allowed that,” Pettit said.
RIT prototyped the star tracker on campus. A fabricator in Scottsville helped finalize the device.
