The virus was diagnosed in a state resident for the first time ever last year, though it was unclear whether the individual contracted the illness in the state.
According to the Winnebago County Health Department, ticks in the area tested positive for the virus recently, leading to the warning to the public to be aware of the risks of tick-borne illness.
According to research cited by PetMD, while it’s unclear if pets are affected by the virus people are, especially those with weakened immune systems, or children or older residents.
Approximately 50% of people infected with the virus are permanently effected, and up to 10% die from complications from the illness, according to the studies.
Initial symptoms of Powassan virus include fever, headache, vomiting and weakness, according to the CDC.
Advanced cases can cause inflammation of the brain, or inflammation of the membranes around the spine and brain.
Since there is no cure or treatment for the virus, officials recommend using enhanced vigilance in areas where tick populations are high, including:
-Wearing light-colored, long clothing
-Applying insect repellants that are approved by the EPA
-Reducing tick populations in yards
-Checking for ticks on yourself or your pets after spending time outdoors
