A conversation with Sal Usman, owner and manager of Copy Cove

La Jolla Village News: As a legacy family business, what sustains Copy Cove’s mission to serve the community of La Jolla?

Sal: When relationships are built, fulfilling our commitment to our valued customer projects becomes our paramount priority. We have to make the deadline!

La Jolla Village News: What are the opportunities and challenges you’ve experienced since taking the reins of your family business?

Sal: The challenges have been adapting to today’s cost of living and having a brick-and-mortar business, even though most of our customers are online.

The opportunities have been that our customer is much more technologically aware and proficient which allows us to communicate and collaborate online efficiently to attain a successful product.

La Jolla Village News: What are the changes — large or small — that you’ve implemented to ensure Copy Cove’s continued success?

Sal: We’ve managed to retain our core staff and expand our services. We acquire all new, upgraded equipment every five years to stay at the forefront of technological advances in printing. We also have print partners on the West and East Coasts, and in the Midwest, to expedite quality printing off-site that we ship directly to our customers in other parts of the country.

La Jolla Village News: What do you value most about managing a small business in our community?

Sal: The relationships. They’ve spanned over four decades and they run deep.

La Jolla Village News: As owner and manager, what is your most memorable Copy Cove customer service story?

Sal: Every customer and project has a story. But the overall take away is the fact that we’ve printed for generations of families. For example, we’ve been privileged to be part of every stage of our customers’ lives.

We’ve printed their birth announcements and followed them through their life events, from their childhood religious celebrations to their high school and college graduations, engagements and weddings, to the birth announcements for their own children.

It’s quite an honor for us to have earned the trust that creates a partnership through nearly every important event in the lives of our customers. I’m truly grateful to have been a witness in this service capacity.
