ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The United Way kicked off its annual “Scan Campaign” on Wednesday, aiming to support over 1,100 nonprofits that support one in three local households.
People can donate to United Way when they check out at Wegmans stores now through May 3, including by rounding up their change. News10NBC spoke with United Way leaders about how they’re supporting people across the six-county region amid increasing demand for food assistance, rising homelessness in Rochester, rising gas costs, and other challenges.
Last year, the campaign raised $400,000 for nonprofits that support food assistance, housing, mental health treatment, and more.
“Think about all the pressures on our household, from food to transportation. Many of us are taking care of our older adults while also raising children. There’s a lot of pressure when you think about human needs. And when you think about that, think about United Way,” said Jaime Saunders, United Way’s president and CEO.
Saunders says that, by coordinating with nonprofits across the region, United Way has learned where the greatest needs are in the community.
“There’s a lot of opportunities to partner with United Way, we make sure that your dollars go further and go exactly where they’re needed most,” she said.
It’s not just shoppers who donate. Around 97% of Wegmans employees donate to United Way, said Teresa O’Loughlin, chief development officer at United Way. She said the organization’s work goes beyond helping people living in poverty.
“There are people above the poverty line who don’t qualify for subsidies and are still struggling. One in three of our neighbors is struggling to make ends meet,” she said.
How to take part in the Scan Campaign
You can donate to United Way while checking out at 21 local Wegmans locations. After scanning your items, you’ll have the option on the screen to donate $2, $3, $5, or any other amount, or to round up your bill.
United Way has partnered with Wegmans for over 100 years to support local nonprofits. You can also donate on United Way’s website and see a list of nonprofits that it serves, along with volunteer opportunities.
