A British consulting group has ranked San Francisco, San Diego and San Jose as the three happiest cities in the United States in an annual international study.
The sixth annual Happy City Index by the metropolitan London-based Gold Group was announced in Britain’s Parliament this week.
European and Japanese cities topped the list of 250 cities, with Copenhagen first and Tokyo fifth. The top American cities were all in California — San Francisco at 45, San Diego at 155 and San Jose at 172.
The only other U.S. cities to make the list were Boston, New York Austin, Minneapolis, Denver, Houston, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Chicago, Tucson, Indianapolis, Dallas and Nashville.
From an initial pool of more than 3,400 cities worldwide, nearly 1,000 cities were selected for deeper analysis, from which the top 250 were identified.
The methodology involved 64 indicators from six areas of urban life: citizens, governance, environment, economy, health and msobility.
“The index is not designed to declare a single ‘best city’ in the world,” according to the researchers. “Instead, it identifies cities that combine good governance, sustainability, resilience and quality of life in a way that offers a more balanced picture of urban development.”
The ranking also listed a 251st city — Kyiv — “as a mark of respect for the efforts of Ukrainian city authorities under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.” Moscow did not make the rankings.
