HENRIETTA, N.Y. — The Mary Cariola Center announced it’s looking to buy and move into more than 190,000 square feet of the former Marketplace Mall. This project is part of a $25 million gift from Tom Golisano, and $4M in state funding.
The plan is to build a new state-of-the-art school to expand access to education and help economic development in the area.
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic learned this will be a Mary Cariola school with the intent of merging campuses together. Officials said the new space will be designed specifically for students’ needs.
“By doing that and having the space available and creating that for our students with their needs in mind, that will just give students and staff the opportunity to really focus on what they need to focus on. And that’s the education, not the environment around us because this will be tailored to our students’ needs,” said Courtney Liggett, Principal of the Mary Cariola East Henrietta Campus.
Mary Cariola would move into the north wing of the mall and the wing closest to JCPenney. Back in December, the mall closed its doors for good, relocating remaining tenants with inside stores to other Wilmorite properties. Places with outdoor entrances remain open.

The Mary Cariola Center will be co-located with what will be the Golisano IDD Institute. Officials said the partnership will benefit the community. “It will simply better our partnership. And it will become a better place for our community. Parents will be able to come in and have access to their child’s education and medical providers,” Liggett added.
The Mary Cariola Center said it’s in the due diligence phase right now, making sure the space is exactly what it’s looking for. But officials said it’s safe to say it will follow through with the purchase. If all goes well, the center will look at closing in the fall.
News10NBC reached out to Wilmorite, the property owner, asking if there are any more plans at this time for the rest of the mall. The company replied saying Mary Cariola was hosting media availability on Tuesday and did not give us an exact answer.
