Just hours after South Carolina’s Eli Ellis and Jordan Butler announced that they would be entering the transfer portal when it opens on April 7, a third Gamecocks has decided he’ll throw his name into the pile.
This time it’s freshman forward EJ Walker, a former 4-star prospect out of Florence, Kentucky who started 6 games for the Gamecocks near the end of the season while appearing in 22 total contests for South Carolina.

He failed to score a single point in 3 of his 6 starts this season and never scored in the double digits despite averaging around 20 minutes per game in league play. To top it off, Walker had a rough time defending without fouling and shot just 47% from the free throw line. For those reasons, it appears likely that he’ll transfer to a mid or low-major program to develop his feel for the college game.
As mentioned above, Walker is the 3rd South Carolina player to announce his intention to enter the transfer portal. Lamont Paris, who will be staying on at least one more season with the Gamecocks, is going to have his work cut out for him in building a new roster for next season. Given Paris’ win-now timeline, Walker, Ellis and Butler’s departures make a whole lot of sense.
