This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Ivette Mercado.
Mercado is a full time administrator at Glenwood Elementary School and for the last 23 years she has run the after school program at Dobbins Hill Community Center, helping hundreds of kids and families and now multiple generations. Due to tax policy changes, that after school is sadly having to shut down, but Mercado has left a legacy of service and quiet heroism that will never be forgotten by the countless kids and families she helped in countless ways. She even organizes programs that benefit the entire community, like free tutoring for the kids at Dobbins Hill with volunteers from the district as well as UNC and making sure kids have gifts every holiday season regardless of their cultural background and their financial ability. Her work has allowed others to be heroes and extends to everyone at Dobbins Hill, not just the kids.
