That includes American Regan Smith, who swam 58.73 in the women’s 100 back heats, and Gretchen Walsh, who swam 25.21 to lead the heads of the women’s 50 fly.
Kate Douglass was 2nd behind her training partner Walsh in those 50 fly prelims in 25.79.
The men’s 50 fly heat saw Swissman Noe Ponti lead the field in 23.13, with a big batch of stars chasing him. Italy’s Thomas Ceccon qualified 2nd in 23.22, Australia’s Kyle Chalmers qualified 3rd in 23.37, and Australia’s Cam McEvoy qualified 4th in 23.56. McEvoy broke the World Record in the 50 free earlier in the meet.
Ceccon came back just 18 minutes later to qualify 1st in the 200 back, albeit in 1:59.58 – almost five seconds off his personal best.
13-year-old wunderkind Yu Zidi was the lone Chinese top seed on the day, leading the women’s 200 IM prelims in 2:12.66. Her countrymate Yu Yiting was 2nd in 2:13.90 and American Alex Walsh qualified 3rd as the other heat winner in 2:14.30.
Kate Douglass was 4th in those heats in 2:15.13.
The end of the preliminary races was the women’s 200 free, where Lani Pallister of Australia qualified 1st in 4:05.87.
