Arizona eased by No. 16 Long Island University in its national tournament opener Friday, 92-58, and was led in scoring by three freshmen (Brayden Burries, Koa Peat and Ivan Kharchenkov).
Utah State surged in the late stages of their Friday game against No. 8 Villanova to pull out an 86-76 win. It was the Aggies’ first Round of 64 victory since the 2023-24 season.

Each program will battle for the right to play in San Jose, which is hosting the region’s Sweet 16 and Elite 8.
The Wildcats, who began the season 23-0 and were a unanimous Associated Press No. 1, have not advanced beyond the Sweet 16 round since 2015.
The Aggies, who won the Mountain West regular season and conference tournament titles, last made the Sweet 16 in 1970. They advanced to the Elite 8 that season, for the furthest the program has ever gone in the NCAA Tournament.
The all-time series between the two is led by the Aggies 3-1, but Arizona hasn’t met Utah State in any capacity since 2005. The other three matchups occurred in 1958, 1961 and 1963.
