BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Major construction is underway to upgrade bridges along Interstate 590 in Monroe County, Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Friday. In the meantime, 590 will be reduced to two lanes in each direction during the construction. Monroe Avenue entrance ramp to 590 south and the 590 south exit ramp to Monroe Avenue will be closed.
Drivers can expect lane reductions and ramp closures through the fall of 2028.

The project will specifically replace bridges over Monroe Avenue and fix spans over Allens Creek Road in Brighton. It will also provide access to the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport and the state thruway.
Other installments include girders, new drainage systems and cleaning repair for existing drainage facilities, increased shoulder widths, signs, a concrete median, new lighting, and repaving on the roadway between the exit/entrance ramps and bridges.
The project aims to reduce maintenance costs and to increase durability during bad weather, providing a smoother commute.
“This bridge improvement project will ensure continued travel on one of the Greater Rochester area’s busiest highways and give residents and commuters a few less headaches to contend with as they go about their busy days,” said Governor Hochul.
The current bridges were built in the mid-1960s, with the future bridges expected to have service lives of 75 years.
The construction is open to allow bicyclists and pedestrians.
