ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester is one of three cities in New York that will participate in a gun violence prevention program in hospitals.

Emergency department staff at Strong Memorial Hospital will offer voluntary gun injury risk screenings for patients 12 and older, regardless of the reason for their visit to the emergency department that day.

Depending on the results of the screening, the patient will be offered resources like gun locks, secure storage guidance and referrals to violence prevention programs.

Rochester is getting part of a $1.5 million state investment to make it happen. Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo and SBH Health System in the Bronx are also getting part of the investment to make it happen.
