Two south suburban high school students were arrested Thursday after a weapon was found inside their school’s gym, authorities said.
Around 11:20 a.m., administrators at Thornridge High School, located at 15000 Cottage Grove Avenue in Dolton, were notified that a possible weapon magazine had been seen in the gym area, according to a statement from Thornton Township High School District 205. The School Resource Officer immediately contacted the Dolton Police Department, the district said.
Multiple police officers responded to the school and searched the building, during which a weapon was recovered, the district said.
The school was put into a lockdown “as a precautionary measure […] to ensure the safety of all students and staff.” After the search, the school transitioned to a soft lockdown for the remainder of the school day.
Two students were arrested in connection with the incident and are in custody of the Dolton Police Department, the district said.
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” said District leadership. “We are grateful for the swift response of our School Resource Officer and the Dolton Police Department, as well as the cooperation of our students and staff during this situation.”
