GENEVA, N.Y. — Hobart College is looking to rebound this year after a roller coaster season. The Statesmen made the playoffs the year prior, and they’re looking to compete at that level again.
“We’re coming back with kind of a new sense of urgency, a new purpose, this year we just want to not be as sporadic, not be aggressive in a sense, but we want to be in control and we want to control what we have to offer and our control our destiny,” said senior running back EJ Taylor.
Despite starting the season 1-5, the Statesmen turned things around to finish 5-0. Taylor attributes that success to a mental shift.
“People got tired of, or the team just got tired of, you know, not just losing overall, but, you know, the mindset, the energy that we had in practices and throughout the season, Taylor said.”
Through 12 practices so far this year, the energy of the team is up. Head coach Kevin DeWall says he’s seen nothing but effort.
“I think the leadership is starting to really form itself. And it’s the cohesiveness,” said DeWall.
EJ Taylor
Taylor is a player that stresses the importance of leadership.
“You know, I am a senior now. I have to take more pride in my process and explain to the guys that, you know, I’m going to be gone next year, and I want them to carry on everything that I’ve done and then make it even better,” Taylor said.
This offense is built around Taylor. The preseason All-American put up 123 yards per game last year in addition to 19 total touchdowns.
Taylor said, “I can’t do it by myself. I never have done it by myself.”
The Defense
He’s joined by preseason All-American defensive lineman Billy Brosko. Brosko is a key part of the evolving Hobart defense.
“The D-line has gotten a lot closer as a unit. We’ve kind of all became a brotherhood,” Brosko said.
Hobart kicks off the season off on Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. against Alfred University in Geneva. Ahead of that game, DeWall’s mindset is simple.
“My goal is we’ll be better today than we were yesterday. And week one, we’re going to give our best effort,” said DeWall.
