Gymnastics set to take the SEC championships stage ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

No. 4 Alabama gymnastics will compete against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Florida on Saturday evening in the SEC gymnastics championships. In the afternoon session, seeds five through nine will compete.

“It’s been a major goal for us to be in this night session,” head coach Ashley Johnston said. “They’re excited, and they have earned this opportunity to go compete to win an SEC championship.”

The championships are in Tulsa, Oklahoma and can be streamed on SEC Network. The afternoon session will start at 2 p.m. CT and the evening session will start at 7 p.m. CT.

With nine SEC gymnastics teams, the championship is split into two sessions. The top four seeds compete in the evening session, and seeds five through nine compete in the afternoon session.

After uproar from SEC gymnastics fans last year, the SEC has decided to include all nine SEC teams in the championships. One of the bottom five teams will have a bye rotation during each rotation of the afternoon session.

Alabama is heading into the evening session with a National Qualifying Score of 197.5, the fourth-best in the country and second-best in the SEC.

To ensure it has the highest chance of clinching the SEC team title, the team will have to straighten out its balance beam rotation. Over the last three meets, Alabama’s balance beam rotation has struggled.

“I’m not concerned about a couple of mistakes,” Johnston said. “I think we’ve been able to break down some of the little issues that were stopping us from accomplishing our best performance.”

There have been wobbles during routines and falls, and when it gets to the postseason, there is no room for mistakes and counting falls.

If Alabama wants to take individual event titles, it will have to make sure there are little to no mistakes on any rotation. Judges will be looking for leaps at 180 degrees, pointed toes and stuck landings.

“We’re still going to compete with that same relentless energy, and that same determination to continue to continue to get better,” senior Rachel Rybicki said. “Go big. We’ve been preparing all preseason and throughout season for this moment.”

After the SEC Championships, there is one bye week before going to NCAA Regionals.
