Team India coach Gautam Gambhir has taken a bold step and has filed a civil suit in the Delhi High Court, alleging misuse of his identity though deepfakes and AI, and also unauthorised merchandise. His legal team calls it a ‘coordinated campaign’, and have claimed INR 2.5 Cr in damages.
“My identity — my name, my face, my voice — has been weaponised by anonymous accounts to spread misinformation and generate revenue at my expense. This is not a matter of personal hurt; it is a matter of law, dignity, and the protection every public figure deserves in the age of artificial intelligence,” Gautam Gambhir said.

One among these fake videos gone viral is, the ‘resignation’ video, that saw over 29 lakh views, while another one on senior cricketer’s World Cup participation, garnering over 17 lakh views.
There is also mention of the sale of unauthorized merchandise on Amazon and Flipkart, using his name. Meanwhile, 16 defendants have been named so far — using social media accounts on different platforms. Apart from the damages, Gambhir has also sought for an injunction against the use of his name, image, voice or persona, and the takedown of all such fake content.
