Record-breaking March heat expected to continue at least into weekend ...Middle East

News by : (Times of San Diego) -

San Diego — along with much of the rest of the southwestern United States — continues to sizzle with an unseasonal, potentially dangerous heat wave that is expected to linger into the weekend.

The hot spell brings with it the threat of health hazards and has already set a series of records for March temperatures — 20 to 30 degrees above average in some regions. On Monday, the weather set several local high-temperature records for March 16: 89 degrees in Ramona, up from 88, set in 2004; 90 in Alpine (88 in 2014); and 93 in El Cajon (92 in 2014).

“For Tuesday, there were 13 daily records for record warm high temperatures that were broken with one tied, while 10 locations set daily records for warmest low temperature,” the National Weather Service said. “The 100 degree high temperatures for Anaheim and Santa Ana were records for March with the prior earliest 100+ degree temperature for both locations in early April.”

Humidity is also dangerously low through at least Friday, ranging from 10% to 15% in the deserts and inland valleys.

“For the weekend into early next week, high pressure aloft will slowly weaken and weak onshore lower-level flow will return with cooling and higher coastal humidity spreading inland,” the National Weather Service said, adding that even with the cooling, temperatures will remain up to 18 degrees above average for inland areas and up to 10 degrees higher than average near the coast.

“An increasing number of monthly heat records for March will be broken or tied the next few days for inland areas.”

An extreme-heat warning is in effect through Saturday evening for desert communities, with temperatures of 104 to 112 degrees likely, with nighttime lows falling into the mid-70s. A less severe heat advisory will be in effect through 8 p.m. Friday for the mountains, with highs in the 90s possible below 4,500 feet and into the 80s at higher elevations.

“Widespread moderate or greater Heat Risk will continue into the weekend except near the immediate coast and in the higher elevations in the mountains,” the NWS said.

Temperatures across the region will be 20 to 30 degrees above normal for this time of year into the weekend.

A slight cooling should move in early next week, with higher coastal humidity spreading inland. Even with the cooling, however, high temperatures for next Tuesday will range from around 5 to 10 degrees above average near the coast to 12 to 18 degrees above average for inland areas.

It is recommended that people drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, limit strenuous activity when possible to early morning or evening, use air conditioning whenever possible and check in on at-risk friends and loved ones.
