CLEVELAND, Ohio — A meteor lit up the sky over northeastern Ohio on Tuesday, creating a stunning spectacle captured by dashboard and home doorbell cameras. So, how rare is it to see a meteor, and could we see one in Rochester? First Alert Meteorologist Nate Morris explains.

Meteors of that particular size are pretty common on a global scale, with usually around 10 to 20 per year. However, most meteors fall in remote areas, often over the ocean, making it extremely rare for people to witness them firsthand. For those in Ohio, this was indeed a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Scientists can actually observe meteors on satellite imagery by looking for bright flashes in the atmosphere. If we take a look at the satellite from Tuesday from Cleveland, right over Lake Erie, there’s a green flash.

This confirmed the meteor’s presence, as no storms were occurring at the time. As the meteor entered Earth’s atmosphere, it burned up, creating an “air burst” that sent a shockwave toward the surface, which many people felt.

Some objects falling from space have caused injuries. In 2013, we had a meteor in Chelyabinsk, Russia, that injured over a thousand people because they saw the bright light, they went up to the window, and then the shockwave smashed the window. There was also the Tunguska Asteroid in Russia in 1908, which leveled around 800 square miles of forest. While meteors of this size, about six feet in diameter, are not rare globally, witnessing one is uncommon.

The Ohio meteor is definitely rare and spectacular, and it’s possible we could see one in Rochester one day. But it’s a good thing it wasn’t larger than six feet.
