Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere made one big mistake – here's how it could have been fixed ...Middle East

News by : (Radio Times) -

And attention is seemingly the only thing that the nauseating streamers featured in Louis Theroux’s latest documentary, Inside the Manosphere, care about, as they so willingly race to the depths of morality with all the haste of a pig digging for truffles. They are known as figureheads of the 'Manosphere', an online community that promotes ideas of 'traditional' masculinity, where men adopt a more dominant role in a relationship while women's rights are marginalised.

Yet despite their hate-filled and often nonsensical ramblings, their largely young and impressionable audience absorbs their grifting as fact, forming a generation of adolescents who are being moulded to their likeness.

Admitting that the landscape is a "wild frontier of streamers whose behaviour is reshaping the culture", Theroux does little to truly understand its horizons, admittedly seeming somewhat speechless as to the sheer support such tedious figures seem to attract as he tails them through the streets of Dubai and beyond. Rarely has the celebrated documentarian, who once thrived in his own discomfort, felt so out of place.

Aside from a brief examination, it is left undecided whether the streamers in question truly believe in the bile squirting out their mouths. The documentary, too, seems to get bored of its own half-hearted investigation into the reality of Manosphere crypto schemes. And, worst of all, the most crucial question is all but entirely dismissed – what are the consequences of such extreme misogyny and antagonism for young men and women beyond the screen?

Starmer's words are accurate too, with Theroux's superficial stroll through the Manosphere being unfit for purpose as it bypasses the very victims of such a culture. Consequently, he merely seems to wobble the pedestal of these streamers.

Not only would this approach give more weight to a worthy topic, but it would have acted as a more commanding way to deconstruct and dismantle the ideologies of such streamers who so defiantly believe in their own supremacy.

Where have we failed young men so that they are so willing to follow such figures? How have we let social media sites platform and promote them? How can we fight misinformation and adequately educate young people about marginalised communities? How can we properly support young women and girls who are faced with the results of such misogyny on a regular basis?

You’ll find no answers to such vital questions here.
