Best known as the guitarist and co-lead vocalist for Alice in Chains, Cantrell is celebrating his 60th birthday today, March 18, 2026.
Before that dream came true, Cantrell struggled through some hard times as a struggling young musician — particularly the death of his mother, who died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 43 in 1987, per South Sound Talk. Shortly after his mother's passing, however, Cantrell met lead singer Layne Staley — and one of the most important musical partnerships of the grunge era was born.
The band's next release was the 1992 acoustic EP Sap, followed by their second full-length album, Dirt, which was also released in 1992 and went quadruple platinum. Their 1994 acoustic EP, Jar of Flies (1994), was the first EP ever to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 and spawned the band's first #1 single on the Mainstream Rock charts, "No Excuses" (follow-up single "I Stay Away" hit #10, while the last single, "Don't Follow," peaked at #25). Alice in Chains released by their third self-titled studio album in 1995, which was followed by a legendary MTV Unplugged performance in 1996. Unfortunately, Alice in Chains went on hiatus after that due to Staley's substance issues. (The singer died in 2002.) Alice in Chains reunited in 2005; the next year, William DuVall joined as rhythm guitarist and co-lead singer. The band has released three more albums since then.
Cantrell has also released several solo albums, including 2024's I Want Blood.
