Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker didn’t have any competition in the Illinois primary election, but now he knows his challenger for the November midterm.
Speaking from a campaign event Tuesday night, Pritzker won an uncontested race to become the Democratic candidate for governor, but the night still held plenty of weight for the governor eyeing a possible presidential run. He is the first governor to seek a third term since the 1980s.
“It has been a long and arduous primary season, but when so much is at stake, there’s no time to rest. The general election begins right now,” he said.
Pritzker faced a pivotal moment with his influence on the primary races at stake.
Pritzker threw his support, and his finances, behind multiple candidates in Illinois’ primary in moves that sparked criticism from some at both the local and national level.
Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton is projected to win the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate and Toni Preckwinkle is expected to win the race for Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, but Pritzker-backed Comptroller candidate Margaret Croke remained in a race too close to call as of 10 p.m.
“This election night is still young, and it’s too early to know the results of the most competitive races, but I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate my dear friend and partner in governance, Juliana Stratton. I was proud to run with her in our last two elections, proud to serve alongside her for the last seven years, and proud to endorse her U.S. Senate campaign,” Pritzker said. “She is an outstanding, kind, and genuine person who loves this state with all her heart. And I am grateful to her for all we have achieved together. I am also proud to have endorsed Margaret Croke for Comptroller and Toni Preckwinkle for Cook County Board President. They are fantastic leaders and model public servants. Our state is lucky to have them.”
One of President Donald Trump’s most vocal critics, Pritzker used his victory speech to tout his efforts to oppose the aggressive federal immigration crackdown in Chicago last year. He criticized Republicans’ agenda, called Trump’s presidency an “unmitigated disaster” and vowed to help Democrats across Illinois win in November.
“This is the fight of our lives,” he told supporters at a downtown Chicago hotel. “Everything we care about is under siege from Washington.”
Pritzker also made digs at Republican candidate Darren Bailey, a former state senator whom he handily defeated in 2022. Bailey was projected to win the Republican nomination for the governor’s race yet again, setting up the stage for a rematch in November.
“Tonight, it appears the Republicans have again nominated Darren Bailey as their candidate for Governor. Remember him?” Pritzker said. “Bailey wants to be the Donald Trump of Illinois.”
Bailey has said he is doing things differently. For one, he focused more on Chicago voters by choosing running mate Aaron Del Mar, who leads the Republican Party in Cook County.
Bailey criticized Pritzker’s leadership, including blaming him for rising costs, saying, “He’s just another billionaire who has never once felt the pain he’s inflicted.”
“You’re going to hear JB Pritzker and his Democrat allies try to compare it to Donald Trump, and use some pretty mean words while doing it. Well, there are things that I agree with Donald Trump about, and there are things that I disagree with him about. I am my own man,” Bailey said in a speech Tuesday night. “But when Trump is right, we’re going to try to do those things in Illinois.”
