A suspect was charged with a hate crime and aggravated battery after yelling racist remarks at another person inside a Lombard bakery on Friday night, authorities said.

A judge granted prosecutors’ motion to deny pre-trial release for Justin Ward, 34, following the incident outside Crave Cookies, 217 E. Roosevelt Rd. According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, at around 9:19 p.m. on Friday, a man was in the parking lot of Crave Cookies when Ward allegedly started shouting at him.

Ward allegedly followed the victim into the business and yelled, “f*** Iran,” “this is America” and “I can’t f***ing stand you Indians” before spitting on the victim. According to prosecutors, Ward followed the victim while he walked out to his car before leaving the scene.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, in a news release, in part, said, “The type of behavior alleged in this case will never be tolerated in DuPage County.”

Ward’s next court appearance has been scheduled for April 6.
