Picture this: It’s the 1990s and you’re hanging out at the mall with your closest friends. You’ve got some babysitting money burning a hole in your pocket and you’re in the mood to treat yourself to something special. You pass by a bunch of fragrances at the beauty counter, then stop to test some samples and find your perfect match.
Scent is a powerful memory maker and to this day, you’re likely transported back in time to the ’90s when you catch a whiff of any scent that reminds you of your favorite ’90s mall perfumes.
We’re all about nostalgia here at Parade, so we consulted Erika Kuhn, a perfumer and the founder of Modern Vanilla, and asked her to share 10 iconic 1990s mall perfumes women over 40 still miss. To help recreate the magic, we also had her share modern dupes for ’90s perfume.
Kuhn explains why these scents still stick with us today, decades later. She also shares plenty of fragrances that you can still get. Ready to take a walk down memory lane? Here are some of the hottest fragrances of the mall fragrance era.

The Mall Fragrance Era, Explained
Kuhn says mall culture peaked in the 1980s and ’90s and offered the “best and biggest way” for people to smell perfume in person at perfume kiosks and department stores.
“Scent was a huge part of that entire buying experience with retailers spritzing their signature scent on the sales floor to become unforgettable, immerse customers into their brand experience and entice them to buy into that lifestyle,” she tells Parade.
Why These Scents Stuck With Us
“Scent is one of the best ways to trigger memory, so smelling a ’90s mall fragrance can instantly transport your mind back there,” Kuhn says.
The perfumer notes that a trip to the mall was often a “cultural experience where you could find your community.”
“Brands and their fragrances were all part of that feeling of fitting into a specific group or becoming who you aspired to be,” Kuhn adds.

“Both are empowering fragrances for men and women, boasting heavy white florals and amber for subtly sweet and spicy scent profiles with overlapping notes of jasmine, vanilla and caramel. Both are perfect if you want to smell expensive and regal,” she tells Parade.
2. Best Upgrade on the Original: ’90s: Tommy Hilfiger Tommy Girl, $48.30 (originally $69) / Modern: Tommy Hilfiger Tommy Now Girl, $48.30 (originally $69)

“This classic preppy scent has been modernized into a sweeter citrus musk. The updated scent has more of a luxury/niche perfume vibe vs. a clean sporty scent,” she says.
3. Best Budget Match: ’90s: The Body Shop Dewberry Perfume Oil, $32 / Modern: Phlur Vanilla Blackberry, $39
The Body Shop

“These two fragrances take berry notes in different directions, with The Body Shop’s fragrance highlighting juicy floral woods compared to Phlur’s neo-gourmand with fruity notes balanced by warm vanilla and amber,” she explains.

“Created by perfumer Tomoo Inaba, Zoologist’s Nightingale fragrance opens bright with violet and rose notes, then unveils a moody, musky base, similar to Shiseido’s Féminité du Bois,” Kuhn says. “Nightingale incorporates animalic notes like white musk and ambergris, but it’s completely vegan, which is a plus.”
5. Best Floral Perfume: ’90s: Clinique Happy, $87 / Modern: Arm’s Reach Juna, $175

“The bright citrus-floral scent was so uplifting and iconic and could be found in everyone’s mother’s vanity,” Kuhn says.
Clinique Happy is still available today. But for a modern alternative, Kuhn recommends trying Juna by Arm’s Reach.
“It opens up to a refreshing juicy blend of cantaloupe, bergamot and lemon. Fruity-floral middle notes of pineapple, gardenia and rose nod to these ’90s fragrance profiles with a lasting amber, patchouli, musk base,” she says.

“Dossier proudly created a dupe that balances marine notes that can be hard to wear with watermelon, bergamot, lime, rosemary and jasmine over an earthy woody base,” she says.
