2026 SPANISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

March 11th – March 15th Sabadell, Spain LCM (50m) Live Results

We’re entering the penultimate night of action at the 2026 Spanish Open Championships and already we’ve seen some impressive performances both from the host nation’s swimmers as well as from the visiting foreign contingent.

On the home front, we reported how 18-year-old Luca Hoek ripped a new Spanish national record in the men’s 50m freestyle.

One day after his 18th birthday, Hoek clocked a time of 21.93 to slice.06 off his former benchmark of 21.99 notched at last summer’s Euro Juniors in Slovakia. Prior to that, the NR belonged to a supersuited Javier Noriega at 22.04 from 2009.

You can read more about Hoek’s record here.

Visiting 32-year-old veteran Silvia Di Pietro has done damage across multiple events thus far in Sabadell.

The Italian established a new competition record on her way to topping the women’s 50m fly podium, hitting a mark of 26.04.

That held a healthy advantage over countrywoman Elena Capretta who secured silver in 26.43. Spain’s Carlota Rodriguez produced 26.64 as the bronze medalist.

It was last year in Singapore where Di Pietro nabbed a new lifetime best in this event, registering 25.49 in World Championships prelims. She ultimately placed 7th overall in a time of 25.64.

Next on Di Pietro’s list here was the 50m free where she also found success, posting 24.87 as the clear victor and sole competitor to clear the 25-second barrier.

Spain’s Irene Ciercoles snagged the silver in 25.35 as Maria Daza bagged the bronze in 25.44.

Di Pietro’s meet record-setting outing checked in as the 6th-fastest performance of her career and within striking distance of her 24.72 PB set at the 2022 European Championships.

The women’s 50m breast also had an Italian wind up on top as Olympian Benedetta Pilato got it done for gold in 30.65.

She held off a pair of Spaniards in runner-up Nayara Pineda, who touched in 31.08 and Jimena Ruiz who logged 31.46.

Pilato has already been as quick as 30.48 this season, a result she delivered last month at the Lisbon International Meeting to currently rank 5th in the world.

On the men’s side, Hugo Gonzalez struck gold in the 200m back, turning in a performance of 1:58.54.

He kept Diego Mira at bay, with Mira hitting the timepad just .40 later in 1:58.04. Daniele Del Signore of Italy also landed on the podium in 1:59.17, good enough for bronze.

Former Cal Bear Gonzalez earned gold in this 2back at the 2024 World Championships, where he clocked a time of 1:55.30, the 2nd-fastest time of the national record holder’s career.

Gonzalez also collected a couple of minor medals here, earning 50m fly silver (23.98) and 50m back bronze (25.48).

Teo Del Riego was the gold medalist in the 50m fly in 23.69 while Adrian Santos cleared the 50m back field in 24.76.

Additional Notes

Carlos Garach proved too quick to catch in the men’s 400m free, putting up 3:48.67 for gold. The result was just over a second outside his PB of 3:47.29 notched nearly two years ago. Italy’s Filippo Bertoni was next to the wall in 3:50.83 and Cristobal Vargas punched 3:51.02 as the 3rd-place finisher. Spanish swimmer Laura Cabanes led the women’s 100m fly, posting 58.51 as the only competitor to dip under the 59-second threshold. Caparetta captured silver in 59.04, followed by Ciercoles who collected bronze in 59.56. The men’s 100m fly saw Isak Fernandez of the host nation wind up on top, registering 52.56. He carried a narrow advantage over countryman Arbidel Gonzalez who touched a hair later in 52.77, settling for silver. Jordi Carrasco was also in the mix, picking up bronze in 53.18. Alba Vazquez made some noise en route to winning the women’s 400m IM, logging 4:38.16 for the victory. She handily defeated the field, with Emma Carrasco representing the next-closest competitor in 4:43.33. Maria Santana rounded out the podium in 4:48.47. Vazquez’s mark established a new lifetime best for the 24-year-old, overtaking her previous PB of 4:38.53 notched when she became the world junior champion in 2019.
