Jonathan Owens Becomes the Latest Bears Safety to Leave Chicago ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Another day, another departure from the Chicago Bears’ secondary.

Jonathan Owens becomes the latest defensive back to leave the fold. Owens is reportedly signing a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts. Once the deal becomes officially official, Owens will join Kevin Byard, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Jaquan Brisker, and Nahshon Wright as members of the Bears’ defensive backfield from the 2025 team who will be playing elsewhere in 2026. The NFL moves fast. And is quick to move on without you.

REPORT: Jonathan Owens is signing with the Colts

After spending the last two seasons with the Chicago Bears, Jonathan Owens is signing with the Indianapolis Colts. His time in town was memorable. Owens was a core member of Chicago’s special teams, appearing on more than 55 percent of that phase’s snaps in each of his two seasons with the team. And during a 2024 season in which injuries were an issue in the secondary, Owens picked up 429 defensive snaps. Owens wasn’t a superstar, but he was a useful piece of the puzzle.

BEARS ON THE WAY OUT: Byard | Gardner-Johnson | Wright | Brisker

I will always fondly remember Jonathan Owens scoring the first touchdown of the 2024 season after a blocked punt. The Bears don’t win that game without his gold-medal effort. Speaking of gold medal-caliber moments, Owens might be most remembered by fans for his paying homage to his wife — Olympic icon Simone Biles — during the team’s time on Hard Knocks. Thinking about these last two years can been dizzying when you try to contextualize how much has changed.

For what it’s worth, the Bears have added a pair of defensive backs to help fill some gaps. This free agency period was headlined by the addition of safety Coby Bryant, who just won a Super Bowl as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. The team also signed Cameron Lewis, a versatile defensive back who played snaps at safety and cornerback while with the Buffalo Bills.
