3 facing charges after 115 mph pursuit prompts large investigation in Aurora ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Three Cook County men are facing charges Thursday after a police pursuit that prompted authorities to ask people to avoid an area of Aurora throughout a large investigation involving multiple police departments the evening prior.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Oak Brook Chief of Police announced Thursday a judge granted the state’s motion to deny pre-trial release to 27-year-old Cameron McClellan, 23-year-old Troy Hughes and 23-yearold Dante Williams during their first appearance in court for weapons offenses.

The trio was arrested after a high-speed pursuit involving several suburban police departments.

On Wednesday evening, officers with the Bellwood Police Department initiated a pursuit of a green Jeep suspected of being involved in a shooting, authorities said. Around 5:50 p.m., an officer with the Oak Brook Police Department saw both Bellwood and Hillside squad cars in pursuit of the Jeep on I-88 and joined the pursuit.

The driver of the Jeep, later identified as McClellan, reached speeds of approximately 115 mph and drove on both the right and left side shoulders of I-88 and weaved in and out of traffic before exiting the interstate onto Orchard Road in Kane County, authorities alleged.

McClellan then made his way back to Shagbark Lane, where he drove into the backyard of a residence in the 65400 block of Shagbark Lane, authorities said. Hughes and Williams exited the jeep and fled on foot some at an unknown point in time, authorities said.

Around 6:35 p.m., the Aurora Police Department asked people to avoid the area of Hankes Road and West Galena Boulevard as officers assisted local and state law enforcement agencies in an investigation.

“There is a large police presence in the area. We are asking the public to avoid the area while law enforcement continues their investigation,” Aurora Police Department said in a post on social media.

McClellan was later located in the Jeep on the 100 block of North Deerpath Lane and taken into custody, authorities said. Hughes was found by authorities canvassing the area in the basement of a residence on Blackberry Ridge Drive and Williams in a work van on the same block, authorities said.

An Oak Brook officer also alleges he saw two firearms be thrown from the passenger side of the Jeep during the pursuit, authorities said. A Glock 43X that was reported stolen out of Riverdale and a loaded Ruger .223 rule were recovered by Naperville police officers during a subsequent investigation.

McClellan is charged with one count of armed violence and two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding. Hughes and Williams are both charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. Hughes is also facing one count of home invasion with a dangerous weapon and one count of trespass to residence.

“It is alleged that these three defendants, two of whom are convicted felons currently on parole and consequently prohibited from legally possessing a firearm, were in possession two firearms as the driver of their vehicle, Mr. McClellan, fled authorities at a high rate of speed in rush hour traffic,” Berlin said. “Thanks to the cooperative efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies through three counties, the defendants were safely taken into custody and now face serious felony charges. This type of multi-jurisdictional cooperation is essential to ensure public safety, and we are very grateful for the outstanding relationships we have with our partners in law enforcement throughout the region.

All three will appear in court next on April 6 in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.
