ROCHESTER, N.Y. – As winter loosens its grip on the Rochester, even the most dedicated snow enthusiasts are likely relieved to see the snow and ice has disappeared. Over the past couple of weeks, a welcome combination of warmer temperatures and occasional rain has helped accelerate the thaw across Western New York. I am just as happy to see the salt has also gone away.
The melting occurred gradually, leaving only the largest and dirtiest snow piles behind in the largest parking lots around the Rochester. Official snow depth measurements are taken daily at the Rochester International Airport, typically around 7:00 a.m. The last measurable snow depth at that location was recorded near the end of February, when only two to three inches remained on the ground.
However, the News10NBC First Alert meteorologists are monitoring computer model data which appears to show a broader shift in the weather pattern. This developing pattern change could bring progressively colder conditions back to Western New York in the coming days and weeks. With colder air returning, the possibility of additional snowfall cannot be ruled out.
We should note that this time of year plays an important role in how snow accumulates. The sun angle is increasing and daylight hours are growing longer, which generally limits accumulation on paved surfaces during the daytime hours. Early spring snowfall tends to accumulate primarily on grassy areas at first. Still, heavier bursts of snow, particularly during the overnight hours, when the sun is not present can lead to some minor to moderate snow accumulation and the potential for localized travel issues.
For now, it may be wise to keep the snow shovel nearby just a little longer.
