Although he played in 11 of his 21 MLB seasons with the Montreal Expos, and just 6 of those season with the Chicago Cubs, legendary outfielder Andre Dawson was never unclear about the cap he wanted his plaque to feature in Cooperstown. When The Hawk was voted into the Hall of Fame, he asked that his cap be that of the Cubs, as he felt that was the organization with which he most associated. The decision was made instead that he would don an Expos cap.
But in recent years, after the Hall made a change that allowed players associated with multiple organizations to wear blank caps on their plaques, Andre Dawson had apparently been in talks to go that route retroactively. And now it’s happening:
"It means everything."Hall of Fame grants Andre Dawson's wish to recast his plaque in Cooperstown. He will now have a blank cap, rather than the former Montreal Expos logo.

I just had the ‘M’ on the cap,” Dawson said, per Cubs.com. “That’s what I always related to. That’s where my heart was, even though I was six years a Cub. It means everything. It means I finally had the opportunity to provide my input ….
“It was just a love affair with the fans in right field,” Dawson said. “Andre’s Army. That’s what is most enjoyable about the game. That’s what you play the game for – for the fans. And the way they embraced me, it goes beyond what my wildest expectations would’ve been ….
“I felt that this would, in some way, help me to move forward,” Dawson said. “I’m satisfied that we can put it behind us.”
More on the decision from Dawson at the Tribune:
“After our conversations (in 2023), I think I expressed what my true feelings were, and moving forward, I didn’t get a sense that anything was going to get done,” Dawson said Tuesday from Arizona, where he’s conducting business and planning to take in some Cubs games. “They knew my preference all along was the (Cubs’) ‘C,’ and if that wasn’t manifested, then just give me a blank cap, such as the protocol is now with (Hall of Famers).
“It’s been resolved, and I can move forward now.”
We’ve always thought of Andre Dawson as a “Cubs” Hall of Famer, even understanding his connection to the Montreal Expos and that formalization on his plaque. So this decision, in addition to satisfying Dawson, feels like the right one for the fans.
Andre “The Hawk” Dawson signed a “blank check” free agent contract with the Cubs in 1987.He went on to win the 1987 NL MVP Award and in six seasons as a Cub, he was a 5x All-Star, 2x Gold Glover and won a Silver Slugger. The Hawk’s legacy will soar forever. #BlackHistoryMonth pic.twitter.com/jy5otpQkRa
